Programs and Services

Braswell Rehabilitation Institute for Development of Growth and Educational Services, Inc. (BRIDGES) provides specialized services to persons with psychiatric and co-occurring disorders.  People admit voluntarily to our program either directly from psychiatric hospitals, home, or other community support services, often while still at high risk of rehospitalization.  For adults 18-59 residential treatment is available, providing services in a 24-hour therapeutic environment, with a full array of social rehabilitation services.  For youth 15-21 outpatient services are available, providing for array of needs by offering therapy, case management, psychiatry and medication.

BRIDGES programs use an integrated treatment model, addressing the primary and co-occurring disorders as needed.  Clients and families begin to understand the interaction and complications for the co-occurring disorders and therefore are able to learn the necessary steps to successful community living.

Both conditions are treatable and recovery is the outcome. Recovery for our clients include regaining control and manageability of their lives, maintaining sobriety, feeling a valued social role, and having hope for the future.

The following services are integral components of BRIDGES programs and help our clients achieve a recovery path.

Mental Health

Mental Health Treatment is incorporated into each of BRIDGES’ residential treatment programs, supporting clients through the challenges of transitioning from severe crisis to an optimum level of independent living in the community. Each of the programs offer short-term individual and group counseling, crisis management, assessment and individual treatment planning, medication education and assistance, referral and access to psychiatry and symptom management.  Clients are assigned to work with a treatment team supervised by a Program Director, a Clinical Coordinator, Psychiatrist, and/or Clinical Director.

Substance Abuse

Substance Abuse Education and Support Services is incorporated into each of BRIDGES programs, supporting clients through the difficulties of beginning a new life, abstinent of Alcohol and other drugs. Many clients who enter the program have been affected by the use of drugs and/or alcohol and have not made the connection between their use of drugs and exacerbation of their mental health condition. For those clients who have a dual diagnosis the programs offer assessment, treatment planning, relapse prevention, education and support, inclusive of the 12-step program.  Clients are assigned to work with a treatment team and assisted to develop a support network in the community for lasting involvement.

Medication Management

At each phase of the residential program clients self administer medication under direct supervision of staff. Medications are prescribed by a licensed physician/psychiatrist. Prescribed medications are obtained by clients from local pharmacies under the supervision of BRIDGES staff. Staff is careful to consult with licensed medical professionals to assist clients in accessing medication evaluations, evaluation and monitoring of side effects and clinical effectiveness, and to provide necessary medication education.

Community Linkage

Development of community support systems and community linkage is critical to successful transition to living with increased level of independence. There is an emphasis on learning public transportation, housing, employment options, and aftercare support. In addition clients are assisted with ensuring linkage with external community service providers such as outpatient mental health centers or clinics who provide therapy, psychiatry, and long term case management.  Further linkage may include vocational programs, GED and other educational institutions, including colleges, and employment opportunities.

Wellness and Recovery

Wellness and Recovery Service integrates physical and mental health, vocational and employment preparedness, housing support services and aftercare support  in order to promote a holistic approach to self-discovery and a greater sense of self sufficiency. Through improving life skills, self-advocacy, health and well-being, and increased educational and employment options, clients are empowered to assume personal responsibility for their own self-care and journeys of recovery and achieve successful community integration.
